Maintenance and Care: Prolonging the Service Life of Your Hearing Aids

Health & Medical Blog

Your hearing aids are designed and fabricated to ensure long-term use and performance. However, these devices are considerably delicate and vulnerable to damage when neglected. Therefore, you should invest time into caring for your hearing aids. This process will ensure optimal performance for a long time. Also, you will minimise the financial implications of frequent repair and replacement. Here are some simple guidelines to help you get started on hearing aid care and maintenance.

Protect from Moisture

Hearing aids contain electronic components in their design. If these are exposed to water, they will sustain damage, and your devices will no longer work efficiently. Complete failure after contact with moisture is also not uncommon. You should always remove your hearing aids before swimming, bathing or showering. When you remove the products, do not place them in the bathroom. The high humidity from the shower can have a negative impact. Ideally, you should acquire a specialised hearing aid dryer to keep the device free from vapour damage.

Check the Batteries

The batteries in your hearing devices will not last forever. The power will deplete over time, depending on the quality of the products and your usage habits. In general, the battery energy will drain gradually, and the performance of the hearing aids will decline. Often, you will not be able to tell that the devices are not functioning at peak. Therefore, you should purchase a battery tester. This tool will allow you to check the power levels and perform replacements as necessary. Also, make sure that you have spare batteries in case of unexpected failure.

Clean the Hearing Aids

You should inspect your hearing aids for dirt and grime. It is crucial for the devices to be clean for optimal performance. Ideally, you should have a soft, clean cloth for your cleaning applications. Wipe the surface gently but thoroughly for the best results. You should not use cleaning agents or solvents which can damage the internal components. The ear moulds can be removed for deeper cleaning. These elements are not susceptible to water damage; you can use a mild soap solution for the process. Dry these completely with a forced air blower before reattaching them to the aids.

Finally, you should not attempt DIY repairs if your hearing aids fail during their service life. Self-repair can cause more damage to the devices, resulting in higher charges for restoration. If you suspect that the product is not working at peak, you should consult an expert for assistance.
