Oral Problems That Should Prompt an Emergency Dental Visit

Dentist Blog

An unfortunate habit some people have is only going for a dental checkup when they can no longer tolerate the pain they feel in their teeth. This indifference that is characterised by neglecting routine dental checkups puts you at risk of developing severe oral conditions, as potential problems do not get the chance to be caught before they become aggravated. Besides, while you may assume that painkillers can mitigate some dental problems, some issues require immediate medical attention or the damage could be irreparable. Read on for oral problems that should prompt a visit to your  emergency dentist.

Extensive oral decay

The tricky thing about developing a cavity is that it is challenging to identify the exact moment that it metamorphoses into an emergency. The reason why it is difficult to discern this is that a cavity progressively gets worse over time. When you stick to scheduled dental appointments, you have a better chance of this cavity being spotted and remedied. However, if the cavity forms after a routine checkup and you do not visit your dentist soon, it can quickly develop into a mild toothache that will eventually become debilitating. Any tooth pain that has a considerable impact on your day-to-day life making it difficult for you to perform routine tasks should be treated as a dental emergency. Not having it checked out professionally can lead to additional dental complications such as permanent damage to your pulp, which can result in the need for root canal therapy.

A tooth avulsion

Tooth avulsions may not be a common dental problem, but if you do develop this condition, it is vital to see a dentist immediately. When a tooth is avulsed, it means that it has forcibly become detached from its position. Thus, avulsion usually occurs when you suffer from high impact directly to your mouth. Dental avulsions need to be addressed as soon as they happen, as the longer you delay, the less likely that the tooth will attach back to its socket. Secondly, it is also critical to ensure that the integrity of the avulsed tooth is maintained. The first course of action is to rinse out the tooth in warm water then attempt to place it back into your jaw. Make sure to hold it in place as you rush to the dental clinic. If this does not work, it is recommended to place the tooth in some warm milk, to keep it from drying out, and rush to the hospital.
